Did you know Oaxaca hosts one of the world’s most important festivals honoring indigenous culture?
Yep, it’s called La Guelaguetza! Author and freelance writer Suzanne Barbezat describes the festival in this Tripsavvy article:
"The Guelaguetza Festival is a celebration in which representatives from the many communities of Oaxaca come together and celebrate the diversity of their traditions and cultures. The state of Oaxaca is home to 16 different ethnolinguistic groups and is incredibly diverse. For the Guelaguetza, members of these groups gather wearing their traditional clothing and perform folk dances that are particular to their region. At the end of the dancing, they throw items to the crowd, products that come from the region they represent."
It’s a celebration of Oaxaca’s traditions and diversity, since the Mexican state is home to sixteen different ethno-linguistic groups.
The festival’s roots date back to pre-hispanic times as a way to honor the corn goddessCenteotl and ask for a good harvest.
Today'sGuelaguetza combines those precolonial celebrations and the Catholic feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
